DIY Carpet Cleaner

Yes. I use to be the one that picked up that artificial and full of synthetic fragrance Carpet Deodoriser from the cleaning aisle at Woolworths.

Bring it home and applying to my carpets 15 minutes before I vacuumed. However every time I sprinkled the powder on to my carpet to deodorise and refreshen, I would sneeze and sneeze again to only realise the scent had play up with my senses and my eyes have become itchy!

I thought to myself .. this can’t be good! Why can’t my oils do what this cheap and nasty carpet deodoriser is doing! So I research and played around with something  until it worked!!!

I bring to you … not only a carpet deodoriser, but a carpet cleaner!

It leaves my carpets clean and fresh.. It honestly revamps my carpet that has been played on by my kids, laid on to watch their favourite shows and read their favourite books.

I know now, that I don’t have tiny toxic powdered chemicals left behind in the nook and crannies of my carpet notches … but a safe and non toxic cleaner that is non harmful for my children and no more reactions for me each and every time I use it.

Amazing to say the least!

2 cups of baking soda

10 drops your favourite dōTERRA essential oil

We recommend: Purify, Eucalyptus, Lavender or dōTERRA® Easy air

Sprinkle mixture over carpet

Let rest for 1-2 hours

Vacuum clean

Frankincense – The king of oils

Frankincense oil is known as the King of Oils – and it truly deserves this title. I use it daily to promote my general health and wellbeing. If I ever had to choose just one oil to have, it would be frankincense. Frankincense has a long history of being used as a prized and precious essential oil. Historically it was used by the Babylonians, Assyrians and Egyptians in religious ceremonies, and as a resin for balms and salves. And of course, the three wise men brought frankincense to the baby Jesus as an offering.

Frankincense is taken from Boswellia when it is extracted from the bark of the tree. The milky-white sap will quickly harden to a resin and then be scraped off the tree in the form of pear-shaped droplets. The colour and quality of this resin vary greatly, from the highest quality (clear and silvery in colour) to the lowest (of a brown-yellow hue).

Today, the essential oil, acquired by steam distillation of the resin, is widely used and holds great therapeutic value.

The following are just a few of the many uses of Frankincense,

  1. Help with wounds from cuts, scrapes, and burns. For even greater benefit, apply Lavender essential oil first then layer Frankincense on top. The combination of these two oils together is amazing when it comes to helping with wounds.

  2. Neurological support. Frankincense is probably the best oil I know of for neurological support. It helps with the function of the central nervous system in particular. Whether it’s helping with clarity of thinking or balancing the emotions, frankincense has a lot of benefits to offer.

  3. Reduce and fade scars. Just combine 2-3 drops of frankincense oil with coconut oil, and directly apply it on your skin.

  4. Fosters a strong immune system. Massage a few drops into the balls of your feet daily or put 1 drop under your tongue to boost your immune system. You can also diffuse it throughout your home or in your bedroom at night.

  5. Reduce stress and anxious feelings.Frankincense oil promotes relaxation and feeling of calm. You can simply rub a few drops mixed with a carrier oil on the back of the neck when you feel stressed.

  6. Hormones and Memory. Frankincense can help balance hormones and improve memory.

  7. Ageing skin. Mix a few drops of the Frankincense with unscented oil (like coconut) and apply to your skin. You can also add a drop of Frank to your daily moisturiser.

  8. Head tension. Frankincense can be used to relieve conditions where pain and tension are present.

  9. Congestion. Put up to six drops in a sink or bowl filled with very hot water then bend over the sink with a towel draped over your head to contain the steam. Breathe in the vapours for at least five minutes, adding more hot water as needed. Be careful not to scald yourself; the water should be hot, not boiling.

  10. Relieve itching. A single drop applied to the affected area will bring immediate relief.

  11. Relieve joint pain and swelling. Mix with a carrier and rub into aching joints at night before bed and throughout the day,

  12. Clear up problem skin. Dab one drop on stubborn spots morning and night.

  13. Relaxation. Add 5 or 6 drops to a diffuser and breath in the oil to open the senses and create a calming atmosphere. To elevate your mood a few drops – as a perfume – works well.

  14. Remove moles, skin tags, and warts. Apply a single drop 3 or 4 times a day until gone. I used this on a Plantar wart and it was gone in 3 days.

  15. Enhance vision. Put 1-2 drops of Frankincense in your hand and then rub your index finger in the oil and rub it onto each of your temples. It can provide greater clarity to your vision and bring everything into greater focus.

  16. Remove musty odours. Place a couple of drops in a small dish of water and the room will take on a much fresher smell.

  17. Oral Health: Useful as a preventative measure against oral health problems such as bad breath, toothaches, cavities, canker sores, and other infections. Try mixing with baking soda and coconut oil to make your own toothpaste.

  18. Promote sleep Diffuse frankincense at bedtime to help you slow down your breathing and relieve nervous tension and anxiety. You will sleep like a baby!

  19. Enhance the efficacy of other essential oils.

Frankincense is one that everyone should have in their kit of oils. They don’t call it the King Of Oils for nothing.

Phototoxic Essential oils

Phototoxic essential oils contain a high percentage of a constituents called Furanoids which cause an increase in  the effects of the sun on our skin. These constituents are commonly found in the peel of citrus fruits – they are what cause the fruit to change colors as they ripen in the sun. Fascinating! But….

Applying a Phototoxic oil (even diluted) can result in:
Severe burns, Blistering, Change in skin color (usually brown) and/or Swelling

Photosensitive essential oils still pose a risk but much less:
Not all citrus oils are created equally. The worst offender is Bergamot but some citrus oils have less furanoids and fall under a milder photosensitive category.  And some citrus oils like Mandarin and Wild Orange aren’t an issue in the sun at all.

Thankfully there are only a handful of oils you need to be really careful with. Phototoxicity is mainly a concern when a phototoxic oil or a product containing an oil is applied to the skin and left on. Products like face washes with citrus oils are diluted in the product and rinsed off. Products you wash off are not known to cause issues issues. DoTERRA took the extra precaution of using steam-distilled Lemon and Lime in their skincare products  – distilled citrus oils are not photosensitive at all! Internal use of citrus oils is also typically a non-issue. Do take care if you have extremely sensitive skin.

Here are some guidelines for which oils to avoid for sun-exposed skin:

IMG_0573.PNGOther new oils from doTERRA that contain citrus oils:

Hope blend contains distilled Bergamot so it is not photosensitive.
Just remember to apply these where you wont be exposing skin to the sun, or use them on the bottom of your feet, and you’ll be just fine. Essential oils are such a wonderful blessing in the hot summer months – Terrashield to avoid bug bites, Peppermint to stay cool, Citrus oils in your water to help you stay hydrated and so much more. No need to avoid them, just be careful with a few.
Keep your oils “where the sun don’t shine” and have a fantastic spring and summer!

5 Wonderful Benefits of Clary Sage

Clary sage essential oil not only promotes a calm environment it is calming for the skin. Can be combined with Rosemary in a bath or applied topically after diluting. Clary sage oil is often added to creams, soaps and lotions because of its amazing skin benefits.
Safety Note: If you are using essential oils in your bath in is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you mix your essential oil with epsom salts first before adding it to the bath.
Hair Growth
Clary sage is often used as a DIY shampoo to promote healthy hair and scalp. It’s known to stimulate hair growth, treat the scalp and fight dandruff.
A powerful relaxant, Clary sage essential oil can calm the nervous system during times of depression, stress or grief. Clary sage is a favorite for those with anxiety and promotes restful sleep for those with insomnia. The relaxing and calming properties of clary sage are extremely effective and worth the price tag.

Although closely related, Clary sage is different than the white sage that is most common; be sure you know which you are buying. Because of its potency it’s extremely important that you dilute the oil prior to using.
I can’t stress enough how important Clary sage essential oil is to women. It’s a true gift from Mother Nature and women especially respond well. Clary sage can help your emotions stay grounded, give you clarity and purpose when making decisions while enhancing your confidence with beautiful skin and awaken your sexuality.

The emotional part of our brain only responds to smell

Fact !!

The area of the brain known as the amygdala plays a major role in storing and releasing emotional trauma. The only way to stimulate this gland is with fragrance or through the sense of smell. In other words – the emotional brain responds only to smell and not to words that are read, spoken, heard, or felt by Braille. Our sense of smell links directly to emotional states and behaviors often stored since childhood.

Smell is the only one of the five physical senses that is directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain – our emotional control center. Anxiety, depression, fear, anger, and joy all physically originate from this region. A certain fragrance can evoke memories and emotions before we are even consciously aware of it. When smells are concerned, we react first and think later. All other physical senses are routed through the thalamus, which acts as the switchboard for the brain, passing stimuli onto the cerebral cortex (the conscious thought center) and other parts of the brain.

Essential oils enable us to access stored or forgotten memories and suppressed emotions so that we can acknowledge and integrate or release them. The word “emotions” can translate as “energy-in-motion.” Emotion is the experience of energy moving though our bodies. This emotional energy actually works at higher speed than thought. Thought and images can take seconds or minutes to evoke a memory while an aroma can evoke a memory in milliseconds.

Interesting isn’t it xx

Power of lemon essential oil

If you’ve been feeling the itch to get some spring cleaning done, you may notice some areas of your home have been neglected for far too long. Luckily, doTERRA Lemon oil can help make cleaning those long-forgotten nooks and crannies easier. Here are 10 ways you can use Lemon to clean your home.

  1. Microwave—Microwaves are notorious for being tough to clean, especially after mishaps involving spaghetti sauce or tomato soup. To ease the pain of cleaning, simply microwave a cup filled with water and a few drops of Lemon, then wipe clean!
  2. Dishwasher—Pour distilled vinegar into a dish and add 5–10 drops of Lemon oil. Place this dish in your empty dishwasher and run on high.
  3. Stove Top—Lemon oil makes cleaning one of the dirtiest areas of the kitchen easy. Add vinegar and Lemon to a spray bottle, and watch the grime disappear!
  4. Appliances—From dust to greasy food spills, appliances collect more dirt than you might think. A simple solution of Lemon oil, water, and vinegar will help you clean toasters, refrigerators, mixers, and more.
  5. Garbage disposal—If you’ve been smelling something funky coming from your sink, it might be time to clean the garbage disposal. This DIY for Lemon disposal refreshers should help!
  6. Ceiling Fan—Fan blades collect dust at turbo speeds and cling to them for as long as you let them. To avoid choking on dust bunnies while cleaning your ceiling fans, spray the inside of an old pillow case with a Lemon/water mixture and loop the fabric around each blade.
  7. Washing Machine—Run a mixture of Lemon oil, baking soda, vinegar, and water through your empty machine on the hottest setting to break up dirt build-up and mildew. Scrub any excess with a sponge, then run the machine again with fresh water.
  8. Trash Cans—Regularly cleaning out trash cans can eliminate odor. For indoor trash cans, spray the inside and outside of each can with a mixture of water, Lemon oil, and vinegar, then scrub with a sponge.
  9. Windows and Windowsills—The same mixture of Lemon oil, water, and vinegar in a spray bottle that you’ve been using all around the house will do wonders for your windows and windowsills. Simply spray glass and wipe with a clean cloth or paper towel, then move onto ledges and sills with a toothbrush or damp sponge.
  10. Air Vents—One of the most overlooked areas to keep clean in your home is the air you breathe! Clean vents with a sponge dipped in warm water, vinegar and Lemon oil to help eliminate allergens and dust from filling the air around you.

Lemon oil acts as a powerful cleaning agent and the possibilities are truly endless! Share this post and let us know how you like to clean with Lemon oil.
